On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India. It came into force on 26 January 1950, a date now observed as Republic Day. The two dates are often mentioned together, but they mark distinct moments: adoption first, then commencement.
Why the distinction matters
Constitution Day is an opportunity to revisit the making of the document: extended debate, committee work and the effort to frame a common constitutional order for an independent country. Pair the anniversary with an explainer on citizenship, rights, federalism or Parliament, and link to the primary text.
